I came to after succumbing to the darkness again. I wasn’t sure how long I’d been under, but the scent of blood, waste, and sorrow was thick in the damp air and the room was quiet. Too quiet.

It was a chore to open my swollen eyes and every movement speared white-hot pain through my jaw. I’d taken a beating and after he’d gotten tired of using his hands, he’d opted for a wrench. My tongue licked across the bloody sockets where my teeth used to be but I focused on my men instead. Cristian was still slumped over in his chair, dried blood bordering the edges of his face and reddening his short, cropped hair. To his right, Doug was still conscious. He was dissociated, a deadness in his eyes, when I noticed his most recent torment. Both hands were smashed and bloody, a stake driven through each palm and into the wooden chair beneath. I craned my sore neck to look at wide-eyed Anthony. The loudest of the four of us, a ratty t-shirt hung from his mouth, taped there as a gag to keep him from screaming anymore. He was naked from the waist down and two of his severed toes still lay on the ground, in his pile of filth like a silent warning.

We’re not done with you yet.

The too-bright light flickered to life when the door at the top of the stairs slammed open against the moldy wall. Worn work boots crushed against the groaning wood, descending until we were once again joined by the masked man. A clown mask— with upturned lips that matched the heinous chuckle we’d heard every time he’d inflicted his own brand of tailored pain. At the top of the mask was wild orange hair that waved with every punch or swing of the hammer. Over the course of our twenty-three day stay, starved and beaten in what had to be a basement, that mask had come to be synonymous with suffering.

The masked man kicked at Cristian’s chair until he was startled awake. “Wakey wakey, it’s time for some more fun.”

Cristian sputtered and swayed against his bindings and the masked man moved onto the rest of us who were, by some stroke of luck, still alert.

“I’m glad not all of us are weaklings. I was beginning to think we were coming to an early end.” He bent and sat across Doug’s lap, leaning against his bloody, festering hands. Doug screamed and kicked against the ground but the masked man only chuckled. “It’s been too long since I’ve had responsive victims.”

“Get off him!” I shouted, sick of the bile building at the base of my throat. I was exhausted and the pounding at my temples flared when his head whipped in my direction. These were my men. This was my mission. If I had to throw myself on the grenade and take the blast for the good of the rest, I was ready to fall on my belly. But I wasn’t sure I could stomach watching any of the three of them lose their dignity in front of our tormentor.
